Exploring the Riches of Japanese Culture: A Personal Journey

Living in Japan for five years has provided me with a unique opportunity to immerse myself in its vibrant culture. Despite this, there are several aspects of Japanese tradition and lifestyle that I still long to experience. One such experience that I would love to have is attending a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony. This ritual, steeped in ritual and symbolism, offers a profound insight into the aesthetics and values of Japanese culture. I eagerly await the chance to participate in one in the near future.

Immersing in Nature and Tradition

Another cherished experience I aspire to have is walking through the Izu forest in autumn. This journey would include staying in traditional ryokans—Japanese inns. I would love to enjoy the serene atmosphere without being disturbed by tourist buses or litter. The tranquility and beauty of the forest, combined with the authentic experience of a ryokan, would create a memorable journey into Japanese culture and nature.

Experiencing the Full Spectrum of Japanese Culture

Since my early years in the sixth grade, I have been fascinated by Japan. My research and personal fascination with Japanese culture span various aspects, from the aesthetics of tea ceremonies to the rigorous education system. I want to dive into every facet of Japanese culture to gain a comprehensive understanding. This includes living like the locals, understanding their way of life, and experiencing their customs and traditions.

Understanding Japanese School Life

One of the fascinating aspects of Japanese culture, especially for someone like me who has always been intensely aware of different educational systems, is the school life. Unlike the United States, where students can choose the timing of standardized tests, Japanese schools rely on a single crucial examination that determines entry into the desired institution. This adds a layer of ambition and rigor to the educational journey in Japan.

A new challenge that would be very interesting to me is the respect instilled in Japanese students towards their teachers. From a young age, Japanese children are taught to show respect and reverence for their educators, a concept entirely different from the American education system.

Personal Connections and Cultural Environments

My personal connection with Japanese culture extends beyond my time in Japan. My first American friends I met in Hokkaido were missionaries who worked with the Ainu people. This has sparked an enduring interest in Ainu culture and history. My first Japanese friends are from Sapporo, and their linguistic legacy can be seen and heard throughout the island. My love for comparative linguistics led me to study the J and Ainu languages, making it both my vocation and avocation.

Additionally, my interest in Japanese history has specifically focused on the Kenmu Restoration of 1332–34, an event that had significant impacts on the political landscape of Japan. My wife and I have a home with Ainu accents in Hokkaido, a reflection of our deep connection to this unique culture. We raised our daughter in this environment and plan to take full advantage of JR's Fullmoon tickets to explore more of Japan.

Retirement Plans and Future Journeys

Looking ahead, we dream of retiring and embarking on the 88-temple tour of Shikoku, an ancient pilgrimage that has been a spiritual journey for many. While my daughter has already embarked on her own path, we are eagerly planning our next grand adventure.
