How Much of a Festivus Year Was 2021?

Exploring 2021 in the Shadow of the Pandemic

The past year, 2021, was certainly not what we could call a #8220;festivus.#8221; Some mild improvement over 2020 has been observed, with people adapting to the new normal and facing the challenges brought by the ongoing pandemic with a little less panic. However, the specter of fear and danger still looms large.

Facing the Aftermath of the Pandemic

The pandemic has had profound effects on various aspects of society, one of which is the state of public facilities. For instance, a recent visit to the airport highlighted a noticeable decline in the maintenance and orderliness of such infrastructures. The airport was not in a state of imminent chaos, but it lacked the organized atmosphere that usually characterizes such places. There was an undercurrent of abandonment and disorder that was palpable.

The Impact on Social Dynamics

The reduction in the state and upkeep of public facilities is just one of the many consequences of the pandemic. On a more personal level, my sense is that the overall passion and energy that once characterized festivities are lacking. It’s as if people are merely going through the motions, not fully engaging in the spirit of celebration that Festivalus [Festivus] embodies.

Lessons Learned and Future Prospects

The year 2021 presented both challenges and valuable lessons. It taught us resilience and adaptation, but it also highlighted the fragility of our communal spirit. Festivus, traditionally a celebration of what it means to be human, came with significant baggage in 2021. Yet, it also provided an opportunity for reflection and reassessment.

As we move towards future years, the question of how to reclaim the joy and passion of Festivus remains paramount. It is a challenge that requires us to act collectively, to prioritize community in the face of individual fears and uncertainties. Only then can we truly embrace the spirit of Festivus and find a sense of fulfillment amidst the ongoing challenges of the modern world.
