Are Punjabis Sikh or Hindu? Understanding the Cultural and Religious Diversity

Punjabis are people living or having roots in the Punjab region, and their religious affiliations do not define Punjabi identity. The term Punjabi encompasses a wide range of religious beliefs, yet remains a distinct cultural identity in the northern regions of India and Pakistan.

Punjabi Identity vs. Religious Affiliation

While Sikhs are generally more associated with Punjabi culture and language, Punjabis as a whole, including Muslims and Hindus, are proud of their heritage and identity. Both Muslim and Hindu communities are proud to be from Punjab and to identify as Punjabis. Despite this, there can be conflicts and tensions related to the naming and recognition of the region and its identity.
