Can We Keep and Worship Lord Shani Dev’s Photos or Idol at Home?

The question of whether we can keep and worship Lord Shani Dev’s photos or idol in our homes is a meaningful one, given the significance of this celestial deity in Hindu astrology. The answer is a resounding yes. Lord Shani, or Saturn, is widely revered for his role in balancing cosmic justice and ensuring the settling of karmic accounts.

The Origin of Lord Shani

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shani is the son of the Sun God, Surya, and his wife, Saranyu. Saranyu, unable to bear the intense heat of Surya’s presence, left her shadow behind, which was named Chhaya. Chhaya then gave birth to Lord Shani. This tale provides a symbolic context for Lord Shani’s influence and presence in the world.

When Chhaya performed penance during her pregnancy, unknowingly, the Sun God’s rays fell on her womb, darkening the baby’s complexion. This event symbolizes the significant impact that Lord Shani has on the universe.

The Appearance and Symbolism of Lord Shani

Lord Shani is often depicted with a distinctive limp, which he acquired during his childhood fight with Yama, the god of death. This limp is a testament to his strength and resilience. Additionally, he is characterized by:

Blue or black robes A ride on a vulture or an iron chariot drawn by eight horses Holding a bow, arrow, ax, and trident

These symbolic attributes reflect his dual nature of divine justice and cosmic balance.

Understanding Lord Shani’s Role

Lord Shani is not just feared; he is understood and revered for his role in balancing good and bad deeds. He is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is tasked with settling the karmic accounts of humans. This process is seen as a form of paying off karmic debts and clearing away illusions.

While it is beneficial to perform rituals and worship Lord Shani, it is important to approach him with respect and understanding. Fear should be replaced with a sense of purpose and spiritual growth.

Performing Shani Sadhana at Home

Engaging in the practice of Shani Sadhana can be a powerful way to connect with Lord Shani and seek his blessings. Here is a simple Sadhana you can perform in your home:

Sit in a comfortable position, ensuring your back is straight. You can use a chair or a couch if necessary. Begin by thanking Lord Shani for the wisdom he has bestowed upon you regarding karma and moral choices. Chant the following Mantra:

Mantra: Om Sham Shaneshcharaya Namah

Chant this Mantra 108 times with focused concentration.

After chanting, express gratitude to Lord Shani for his blessings and the process of settling your karmic accounts. Perform the Mayur Pankh Mudra, and then slowly open your eyes, looking at your palms and touching them to your forehead.

It is highly recommended to perform this Sadhana on Lord Shani’s birthday and every Saturday for continuous blessings, increased wisdom, and better fortune.
