Exploring Bookstores and More: A Passionate Seacher's Journey

Bookstores have always been my sanctuary, a space where I can immerse myself in the tales and ideas that fill the aisles, or simply enjoy the quiet ambiance of reading. While occasionally marred by requests for donations from NGOs, the experience is unmatched. In this article, I wish to share my journey through different bookstores and the joy of discovering hidden gems, whether in Sydney, New York, or any other city.

Library Visits and Thrift Stores in Sydney

Sydney, with its abundance of eclectic bookstores, never fails to amaze. Here are a few favorites that anyone book lover should visit:

Sappho’s Glee Books: Known for its diverse collection, this bookstore is a must-visit for those looking for unique titles. Abbey Books: A well-known bookstore with a wide range of genres, including literary fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature. Galaxy Books: Another popular choice with a comfortable reading area and a wide selection of new and used books. Local Vinnies stores, such as the one in North Parramatta, offer fantastic deals on second-hand books with decent prices.

Museums, Botanical Gardens, and Zoos

While bookstores are a primary source of pleasure, the joy of finding a bookstore within a museum, botanical garden, or zoo is equally intriguing. These establishments often have a selection of books related to their exhibits, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the displays. Some noteworthy mentions include:

Village Books: A beloved chain of independent bookstores in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in Bellingham, Washington. The Strand Bookstore in New York City: Located near Union Square, the Strand offers a vast collection of used and rare books, with the basement featuring an enchanting selection of vintage books.

Truly Unique Bookstores

Some bookstores stand out for their unique features and character. Such is the case with the Market Fresh Books in Evanston, Illinois. Although no longer operating, it was renowned for selling books by the pound, offering a unique shopping experience. Another memorable store, Change of Hobbit, operated in Southern California for over two decades, known for its sci-fi and fantasy collection and unique owner, Sherry Gottlieb, also known as "Chief Hobbitch."

Editorial Note: Cultural Significance and the Pandemic Impact

The pandemic has had a significant impact on visits to bookstores, with the closure of bookstores and the move to online shopping. For me, these visits were some of the worst parts of the pandemic. However, in the post-pandemic era, it's even more crucial to support independent bookstores, which often face the most significant challenges. Bookstores like those in Montreal, with their thriving used book scene, are testimonies to the enduring legacy of book culture.

One of my highlights was a visit to Barnes Noble near Union Square in New York City, where I discovered some hidden gems among the used books in the basement. Similarly, in Toronto, the four remaining BMV stores offer a unique browsing experience, while the remaining used bookstores on Yonge Street continue to thrive.

For book lovers and bibliophiles, discovering a new favorite bookstore or revisiting old favorites can be one of life's quiet pleasures. No matter where you visit, be it a city or a small town, there's always a bookshop waiting to be explored.
