When visiting Turkey, anyone, regardless of their nationality, is treated like a Turk. There is no discrimination based on attire or origin as long as one respects the local culture and people.

Turkey is often viewed as a modern Islamic country and even a role model for other Islamic nations looking to develop into modern societies. However, in recent times, there has been a perceptible trend, albeit not universally accepted, towards more conservative and traditional values, aligning with Western perceptions. For a foreign female, especially from a Western background, it is advised to behave and dress modestly and be cautious about drawing unnecessary attention.

Despite these cultural shifts, a woman should not face physical danger so long as she avoids suspicious or illegal behavior. This applies to women from both Western and non-Western backgrounds.

Personal Experiences and Observations

A personal trip to Turkey seven years ago confirmed that the country remains a fascinating destination. My experience was enlightening and enjoyable, and it reinforced my fondness for the nation. While many individuals, including my guide, may not approve of these changes, there are others, such as an American journalist who has resided in Turkey for a decade, who find solace and community within the country’s cultural framework. This individual embraced Turkey as a sanctuary from the disillusionment with Western values and societal changes.

These contrasting narratives highlight the evolving nature of Turkey’s socio-cultural landscape. While traditional values are still prevalent in certain communities, younger and more modern elements are also making their presence felt, reflecting the complex reality of life in Turkey today.
