From Liberal to Conservative: A Journey Through Understanding
From Liberal to Conservative: A Journey Through Understanding
Growing up in the 90s, my perception of the world and its inhabitants was quite different from today. In my youth, I viewed my parents and soccer moms as the antagonists, negatively banning anything fun or spontaneous in my childhood. As I matured, however, my perspective shifted dramatically. This essay explores the evolution from a liberal mindset to a more conservative outlook, focusing on the role of my own experiences and understanding of human nature.
Childhood Memories
Back in the 90s, the playground of my childhood was filled with what I perceived as oppressive restrictions. My parents and nosy neighbors constantly thwarted any attempt at adventure or play. Super soaker squirt water guns, different colored water balloons, and public skateboarding were among the activities banned. Even camping in the outdoors with tents and a campfire for supervised events was restricted. These experiences made me feel that adults were out to spoil any fun and control any form of freedom.
Rebellion and Self-Discovery
The boredom and frustration gave way to rebellion. As a teenager, I and my peers turned to partying, hooking up, and playing rock concerts to escape the constraints of parental and societal control. While I still argue that a lack of restrictions would have led to fewer vices, it's clear that these experiences were a pivotal moment in my life. Escaping supervision and authority became a form of catharsis, and eventually, we matured into responsible adults. The necessity of growing up and taking on the responsibilities of adulthood was the turning point.
Reflections and Understanding
Now in my prime, I look back on those years and can see the wisdom in the restrictions that were once so frustrating. The ban on super soakers and high rooftops was a safety measure. The bans on splashy water balloons and skateboarding on high structures were to prevent accidents. Regulations around firecrackers were put in place to avoid severe injuries. The ban on drug needles in abandoned buildings was a precaution against the spread of diseases. Even the restriction on real camping was a method to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
The Shift in Perspective
As I've grown older, my perspective has evolved. Childhood was a time of innocence and liberation, but with it came risks. The world is a complex place, and while some restrictions seemed oppressive, they were often necessary for public safety. The experience of watching my peers and myself rebel has taught me to appreciate the importance of order and the potential dangers of anarchy. The transition from a liberal to a conservative mindset was not a sudden change, but a gradual realization of the value of structure and responsibility.
Conclusion
Turning 25 marked the end of my rebellious phase. I began to see my parents, neighbors, and community members not as my enemies, but as those who provided a sense of safety and structure. They were not trying to deprive me of fun, but to ensure my safety and well-being. Understanding human nature played a crucial role in this shift. I came to realize that too many individuals were willing to take shortcuts or give up, while those who worked hard and lived honestly were the ones to emulate. My journey from liberal to a more conservative Constitutionalist mindset was not about blind obedience, but about a newfound respect for common sense and responsibility.
