Understanding the Census Questionnaire Distribution and Response Process

The United States Census Bureau is responsible for distributing the Census Questionnaire to every residential address within the country, including territories. This article outlines who receives the questionnaire, who is required to respond, and how the form is filled out. We also address common questions and concerns to ensure an accurate and efficient response process.

Who Receives the Census Questionnaire

The Census Bureau uses a variety of data sources to identify every residential address, ensuring comprehensive coverage that includes:

Prisons Long-term care facilities Unusual living situations such as military housing or temporary structures

For addresses that do not respond, Census Takers will follow up. These individuals conduct door-to-door canvassing in communities where residents live in unconventional housing or temporary accommodations.

Who is Required to Respond

The following individuals and entities are required to respond to the Census Questionnaire:

Everyone residing in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and U.S. territories, including: Puerto Rico American Samoa Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Guam U.S. Virgin Islands Students living away from home Military service members People in correctional facilities Individuals who move on Census Day, April 1, 2020 People without a fixed address

Who is Counted

The census counts all residents of the United States, regardless of citizenship. It does not count tourists, visitors, or foreign diplomats. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive count of the population for various purposes, including resource allocation and representation.
