Inviting Mike Pence to Joe Biden's Inauguration: A Question of Protocol and Unity

President-Elect Joe Biden has already stated that Mike Pence will be welcome at the inauguration. And to Pence's credit, he is indeed attending. While my personal feelings about Mike Pence are not favorable, in the past week, he has demonstrated a commendable level of unity, at least in his actions, in his efforts to support the transition process.

Historical Precedent and Current Context

At all previous inaugurations, the outgoing President, Vice President, and former Presidents and Vice Presidents have attended. However, this year, former President Donald Trump is behaving in a manner befitting a spoiled child, choosing to throw a tantrum and sulk in Florida, rather than behave presciently or in an adult manner.

The question then arises as to whether there are any specific rules regarding the attendance of the outgoing Vice President at a successor's inauguration. As far as I know, it has always been standard practice that the outgoing President and Vice-President can attend the inauguration of their successors if they so wish. It is understandable that some may not want Donald Trump to be present, and his plan not to attend is commendable. However, Mike Pence is a different story. He did not participate in any seditious acts and conducted his constitutional duty of counting the electoral votes, despite the threats faced.

Biden's Stance on Pence's Involvement

President-Elect Biden acknowledges the importance of adhering to historic precedents in how an administration changes hands. During a press conference, he stated, 'I think it's important that as much as we can stick to what have been the historic precedents and circumstances of how an administration changes should be maintained.' He went on to say, 'So if the vice president is welcome to come, I’d be honored to have him there and to move forward in the transition.'

Security Concerns and Alternative Solutions

Given the elevated threats surrounding the inauguration, it would be prudent for Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and President-Elect Biden to take their oaths of office in different locations for added security. These locations can be connected by video conferencing, allowing for a seamless transition without the need for physical presence yet ensuring the completion of the ceremony.

If such a setup is implemented, it would then be appropriate to invite Mike Pence to Kamala Harris's inauguration ceremony. The protocol involved in this situation should ensure that unity and transparency are maintained throughout the transition process.

Conclusion

There is no reason why Mike Pence should not be welcome at Joe Biden's inauguration. He departs his position in good standing, with honor and the respect due to his office. While many Americans may not agree with his political views, those views are irrelevant to the current issue of protocol and unity. The decision to invite Mike Pence to the inauguration can serve as a symbol of moving forward, sticking to long-standing traditions, and maintaining a sense of normalcy in the midst of unprecedented challenges.
