Is Madagascar 4 on the Horizon? Or Any Plans for a Follow-Up?

Since the last Madagascar film in 2014, fans of the franchise have been eagerly waiting for any word on a potential fourth installment. However, the reality is not as promising as one might hope. In truth, a Madagascar 4 movie is highly unlikely by 2022, and the series has likely run its course. This article will explore the reasons behind the lack of a sequel and the alternatives that fans can still enjoy.

The Initial Cancellation and Peacock Series

In 2015, following a corporate restructuring and a new policy of releasing two films per year, Madagascar 4 was removed from the release schedule and was completely cancelled. While the cancellation might have initially caught fans off guard, it was a strategic decision made by DreamWorks Animation.

That being said, for those who still hunger for more Madagascar content, Madagascar: A Little Wild, an animated series, is the closest thing to a sequel. Premiering on Hulu and Peacock in September 2020, the series features the main characters from Madagascar, such as Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman, as children at the Central Park Zoo. It offers a fresh take on the beloved characters and their storylines in a new, younger format.

The Finality of the Original Series

Despite the potential for a fourth film, the answer to the question of whether Madagascar 4 is coming is likely a definitive no. DreamWorks has repeatedly shown no interest in continuing the franchise with a full-length sequel. The reasons for this decision are multi-faceted and rooted in both creative and business considerations.

Firstly, from a creative standpoint, making a sequel a decade after the last film would be less than ideal. The original Madagascar series managed to captivate audiences with its humor and memorable characters. However, ten years later, the touch of the original magic might be hard to replicate. It is noteworthy that Penguins of Madagascar, a spin-off film, was also a financial and critical dud, further cementing the notion that audiences had moved on from the characters.

Moreover, from a business standpoint, a sequel would not only be a bad idea from a creative perspective but also a risky venture financially. The franchise has already run its course, and the newer generation does not seem to be interested in a fresh Madagascar movie. DreamWorks has more pressing and profitable franchises to focus on, such as How to Train Your Dragon.

Other Content and Specials

While the idea of a new Madagascar 4 movie is still far from reality, fans can still enjoy other content related to the franchise. In addition to the animated series, other holiday specials like A Fang-Tastic Halloween and A Magical Christmas Adventure were released in October and November 2020, respectively. These specials offer a different kind of entertainment for fans, focusing on the familiar characters in new and exciting ways.

Ultimately, while the prospects for a new Madagascar 4 movie may be slim, fans can still find joy and enjoyment in the content that is available today. Whether it's through the animated series or special holiday content, there's still plenty to look forward to from the beloved Madagascar characters.
