Lebanese Perspectives on the Syrian War: Seeking Peace and Rebuilding
As a Lebanese citizen living in Lebanon, I want to share my thoughts and insights on the ongoing Syrian war and its impact on Lebanon. While there are differing opinions regarding the conflict, it is clear that our nation's stance is broadly aligned - we long for peaceful resolution and the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.
Reasons for Relief and Concern
On one hand, there is a sense of relief that the Syrian regime is deeply engaged in its own battle, temporarily distorting their influence over Lebanon. This allows us to focus on addressing our own nation's internal issues without the constant threat of external interference. However, this does not mean we are indifferent to the situation; rather, it means we place our own nation's priorities first.
Deeply Tired of the Syria Issue
Lebanon has had enough of the Syrian conflict. The 30-year occupation from 1976 to 2005 was a period marked by brutality and violence, particularly against Christians. After their departure, Syrian interests continue to interfere in Lebanese politics, often leading to tense and unstable situations. Due to this extended history of conflict, many Lebanese feel weary and disillusioned by ongoing tensions.
The Refugee Crisis and Economic Strain
Lebanon is grappling with one of the world's most severe refugee crises, hosting over 1 million Syrian refugees. This strain on resources is significant, especially for a small and economically fragile country. The presence of refugees has exacerbated unemployment and drained our natural resources. Additionally, Palestine refugees who arrived before the Syrian conflict further complicate the situation. Lebanese citizens, already facing numerous domestic challenges, are struggling to cope with the added burden.
Realities and Frustrations
Despite understandable fears, there is little reason to believe that the war will spread to Lebanon. Five years into Syria's civil war, except for two bombings in Hezbollah and Hamra areas, there has been no significant impact on Lebanon's internal stability. However, the Lebanese government faces significant challenges in managing both its citizens and the influx of refugees. It is imperative to address these issues to ensure that Lebanon can rebuild its economy and society.
Conclusion: A Call for Peace and Action
Lebanese citizens, including those who support pro-Assad political parties, generally share a common desire for an end to the conflict. We yearn for the return of Syrian refugees to their homes, where they can rebuild their lives. It is our collective hope that peace will be restored, and Lebanon can once again focus on its own development and prosperity. The legacy of the Syrian war has left deep scars, but it is time to move forward and address the issues that truly matter to us all.
