After Lord Krishna killed his uncle Kansa, King Jarasandha of Magadha became enraged and sought to avenge his family's death by attacking Mathura 17 times. When his attempts failed, Jarasandha turned to his friend, Kalayavana, who had received a boon from Lord Shiva to be invincible. Kalayavana was tasked with killing Lord Krishna, but upon encountering him, he failed to recognize Krishna's true form, which took on the appearance of Vishnu, the Four-Handed Viu form.

When Kalayavana approached Krishna, he saw Him in His Vishnu form, described as having a well-built body, four hands, and eyes like the petals of a lotus. He admired Krishna's beauty but recognized him as the divine being he had heard about from Narada Muni. Not wanting to face the wrath of Nārada, Kalayavana tried to attack Krishna, but Krishna cleverly retreated into a cave on a hill. Inside the cave, Kalayavana saw a man sleeping, whom he mistakenly took to be Krishna. In his frustration, Kalayavana struck the man, only to discover it was Mucukunda, who was burning Kalayavana to ashes with just his eyes. From this incident, Lord Krishna acquired the name 'Ranchod.'

The name 'Ranchod' gained prominence in the 2008 Bollywood movie '3 Idiots,' where Aamir Khan's character was named 'Ranchod,' further cementing its significance.
