Are You Proud of Your Nationality or Do You Want to Change It?

India, a vast and diverse land, is often considered a developing nation, not amongst the global elite in terms of economic prowess, sports, or currency value. Yet, living in India instills a unique sense of pride in its citizens. This article explores the reasons behind this pride while addressing the underlying sentiments of emigration and the pursuit of a better life elsewhere.

The Dream of Emigration

As a child, the allure of other parts of the world seemed like paradise. These regions appeared cleaner, more aesthetically pleasing, and offered greater freedom. Who knew back then what true freedom entailed? Now, with a broader perspective and friendships and family scattered across the globe, the idea of leaving India feels like an alien concept. The core belief that 'apne log hai aakhir' (ours are the people at the end of the day) has not wavered.

When it comes to seeking help, even in dire situations, Indians look to their homeland. It is evident that the Indian government is dedicated to helping fellow citizens, which further cements the bond of national identity. Even in times of crisis, trust in one’s nation remains unwavering.

The Experience of Outsiders

When it comes to external perception, the experiences of Indians abroad highlight the complexities of national pride. Just as former US President Donald Trump stewards about the displacement of American jobs by immigrants, Indians in various countries face their own set of challenges. Persecutions and harsh Visa regimes are real issues that add to the psychological burden of being an Indian citizen outside the country.

Recently, a post on Quora suggested that India is becoming a cheap labor source for Middle Eastern countries, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, similar to how Bihar serves as a source of cheap labor for India. This comparison, while deeply painful, underscores the global acknowledgment of India's skills and labor contributions.

During the Ukrainian conflict, both Russia and Ukraine showed preference to Indian students. This isn't just due to a preference for Indians; it's also based on the respect and recognition that India commands globally. The story of an actress from Pakistan, Kajol, in the Hindi Medium film points to the difference in treatment based on nationality within a single foreign film crew, where Indian members faced less rigorous processes while she endured more stringent checks because of her Pakistani origin.

#GivingBacktotheWorld

India's contributions to the world go beyond economic and political entities. We have trained civil servants for Nepal, provided military support to Bhutan without any conditions, and have no history similar to colonialism as seen in the West. India's actions in providing assistance to others reflect its values and intentions. We have seen numerous atrocities committed by other nations, from the Middle Eastern chaos to the Nazi regime, colonial-era rapes, and contemporary Islamophobia. Despite these transgressions, India's narrative remains uncontaminated by such acts.

Reasons to Be Proud

Despite our shortcomings, such as reservations, population issues, and corruption, India stands tall. We are humble and innocent in our quest for improvement. Pride in India's rich philosophical and religious heritage, Sanatan Dharma, among others, is deeply ingrained. No nation is perfect, but that is precisely what makes pride in one's country so genuine and meaningful. So yes, I am proud of being one of them!
