For travelers not based in Washington D.C., Crystal City in Virginia, just across the Potomac River from D.C., is a great base. It's close to Reagan-National Airport and offers numerous hotel options. The journey to the National Mall from Crystal City typically takes about 30 minutes via the Metro.

Another museum worth visiting is the Udvar-Hazy in Virginia, near Dulles Airport. This location is home to the space shuttle Discovery and a myriad of other aviation and space artifacts. Though it’s a bit further from the National Mall, it has its unique appeal and contributions to the understanding of space exploration.

Eating on the National Mall

Eating in the museums can be a necessity, given the lack of nearby restaurants. However, be prepared to find some items overpriced in the museum cafeterias. Most Smithsonian museums are free to enter, but the food can be rather expensive. For a more budget-friendly dining experience, consider visiting the National Gallery, which surprisingly has one of the best cafeterias in the area.
