Reflections on New Year Celebrations: From Times Square to Cousin’s Place
New Year celebrations are unique experiences that we all carry with us in our hearts. From historical events like the ball drop in Times Square to more personal and intimate gatherings with friends and family, these moments are a cherished part of the yearly tradition. Let's explore the joy, excitement, and sometimes even the complications that come with these memorable moments.
Times Square - The Grand Event
Even if the celebration is a once-a-year affair, watching the ball drop in Times Square on television on New Year's Eve always brings a sense of anticipation and excitement. Last Saturday, I was among those who stayed up until midnight, cheering as the brightly lit ball descended, symbolizing the transition to a new year filled with promises and hope. Watching this grand event on television makes one feel closer to the magic of Times Square, even if it's only through the lens.
But back in 1999, it was different. The world was on the cusp of a new millennium, and we celebrated that moment with a street party. The road was closed off, and the atmosphere was electric with the sound of live music playing in the background. People from all walks of life gathered around, cooking and sharing food on tables set up in the street. From the warm presence of Mrs. Ollie, who was wrapped in her cozy winter wear near a BBQ, to the excited chatter of five-year-old children running around, the event was a vibrant mix of all ages and backgrounds.
As the clock struck midnight, everyone joined in a fireworks display right there in the middle of the street. The money collected from the chipped-in donations paid for the display, and together, we sang "Auld Lang Syne," a traditional Scottish song reflecting the deep emotional ties and the warmth of shared experiences.
A Small Gathered Gathering
Two years later, my friend and his girlfriend hosted a small gathering at their house. It was a more intimate setting, with just a few people including Matt, who is a talented guitarist. The evening was filled with music, good food, and laughter. My friend played his guitar, and Matt joined in, creating a pleasant sound that echoed through the house. It was a celebration marked by simplicity yet filled with warmth and joy.
After the small gathering, I watched the ball drop in Times Square on television and then retired to bed. Every year, the new year brings with it a fresh start, an opportunity to live in the moment without the anxieties of the past or the fears of the future. It's a testament to the cyclic nature of life and how each new year is a chance to reinvent oneself and celebrate life's simple pleasures.
The Multifaceted 2020 Experience
In 2020, things took an interesting turn. At cousin Justin’s place, we celebrated the new year with a playful joke, listening to Justin Bieber's music. It was an unconventional choice, but it added a unique flavor to our celebration. The first CD played in 2021 was a contrast to the last CD of 2020, which was a jazz album by Ray Brown The Whispers. Despite the eclectic mix of music, the evening was filled with laughter and joy.
However, the celebration was marred by an unexpected hiccup. After leaving Justin’s place, I went to a brothel where I enjoyed a few drinks. Unfortunately, my credit card was put on hold by Bankwest due to outstanding invoices from August 2020 to December 2020. I had to use cash from the machines, and the inconvenience was a bummer. Moreover, two years later, my mother had completely forgotten about the hold, mistakenly thinking it was due to a security breach. As I reflect, I realize that sometimes the best and worst moments are intertwined, and it's the small details that make the big picture.
Overall, these New Year celebrations, whether grand or small, are a testament to the joy and meaning they hold for us. They remind us to live in the moment, celebrate life's simple joys, and not let past anxieties or future fears cloud our present moment. Here's to new beginnings, fresh starts, and the joy of sharing moments with loved ones.
