The Significance of Today's Special Date: A Journey of Health and Gratitude

Today stands out as a reminder that life is precious and that every day is a gift to be cherished. While today's special date is April 16th, 2021, I am writing this on February 2nd, 2024, and these thoughts reflect on moments and events that have shaped my life.

A Cardiologist's Lifesaving Impact

This day also marks the date of my visit to the cardiologist who saved my life 13 years ago and again 12 years ago. He is a remarkable immigrant doctor who continues to provide crucial care. Prior to this appointment, I will head to the 'Device Clinic' to undergo a checkup on my bionics, including a defibrillator and pacemaker. They will conduct tests to ensure my pacemaker is functioning correctly and monitor its battery status.

Measuring Progress and Protection

During the checkup, my heart will be sped up, and the frequency and duration of pacemaker functions will be assessed. I will also have a device at home, smaller than a shoebox, to monitor my bionics when I am in my bedroom. This monitoring system is essential for managing my heart condition.

Between the Device Clinic and my consultation with Dr. T, I have the opportunity to visit Marsha, an RN who once told me, 'I didn’t expect to see you again,' following my recovery from open-heart surgery. This seven-word statement fundamentally changed my outlook on life. Marsha's son’s death in Afghanistan added an additional layer of gratitude for my own survival. Thankful that I was spared the draft in 1969, I often reflect on how fortune's hand guided me to remain healthy.

The Role of Insurance and Social Services

The only reason I am able to continue this journey is because of Medicare. My initial surgery cost around a million US dollars, and I have spent hundreds of thousands on pacemakers. Today, my visit with Medicare and a Medicare supplement will cost me about eleven dollars. This affordable coverage is a lifeline without which, I would be financially devastated.

Despite the monetary cost being minimal, the efforts required to manage my condition are significant. Social services play a crucial role in ensuring that such medical care is accessible to everyone. Without the support of science, technology, and social networks, my survival would have been improbable.

A Progressive Vision for Healthcare Access

Reflecting on my journey, I am deeply grateful for the services and opportunities that have been available to me. I wish for similar access and support for everyone, everywhere. The wealth of resources and advancements in healthcare should be distributed equally to ensure that no one suffers due to financial constraints or lack of opportunity.

As a progressive and socialist, I believe in a just society where everyone has equal access to health and other essential services. Respecting diversity in ethnicity, religion, and gender is instrumental in fostering a compassionate and equitable world. I stand as a Social Justice Warrior, practicing 'political correctness,' which means being civil and respectful towards others.

Putting It into Practice

My life has taught me the importance of compassion and putting others before oneself. Even if today’s visit with the cardiologist yields favorable results, I will continue my lifelong practice of showing compassion to others. This commitment is what defines my days.
