The Hidden Depths: Understanding the Impact of Knowingly Discriminatory Behaviors

It's a common phenomenon in human society where individuals and groups engage in discriminatory behaviors, often without realizing the profound impact such actions can have on others. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the formative years of childhood and academic settings.

A Personal Tale: From Hide and Seek to Discrimination

Back in my childhood, we used to play hide and seek until eleven in the evening. It was a joyous time, filled with laughter and adventure. My younger brother was the seeker, and I had discovered a new hiding spot unknown to him. I felt it was my duty to scare him. Just as I jumped out to frighten him, a bolt from the blue, he screamed and ran, unfortunately stumbling and falling. His knee was injured in the process. I was rushed to what I fondly call the 'reprimanding arena'—"Daant Khao Centre".

My parents, always coddling me, showered me with gifts as if my actions were a betrayal. Meanwhile, my brother was taken into the house, while I sat in another room. The crying ceased, and I rushed to the next room. The ground seemed to slip beneath my legs as I entered to discover a bowl of my favorite chocolate ice cream in front of my brother. With a smile, he exclaimed it was mine. My mother replied, "He's injured, son."

This experience was just the tip of the iceberg. As I grew older, I encountered more instances of knowingly discriminatory behaviors.

Discrimination in the Classroom

During my twelfth standard, my class teacher, a person who should have been a shining example, treated me with disdain because I didn't choose the Bio-Mathematics group. She and her peers had coined a derogatory nickname, "PMS", and used it as a tool to exclude me. My presence was almost ignored, and I was constantly being pushed to the sidelines during her Math classes. Even in my Biochemistry classes, she would deliberately leave me, treating me as an afterthought.

The classroom was supposed to be a place of learning and growth. Instead, it became a battleground where discrimination thrived. The humiliation during open house sessions was compounded by the blatant favoritism she showed towards her own students. This behavior wasn't confined to just her; such incidents were a recurring theme throughout my academic journey. Despite a few good teachers that existed, the manifestation of discrimination within the teaching ranks was stark and deeply ingrained.

The Long-term Effects of Hidden Discrimination

The psychological and emotional toll of such experiences can last a lifetime. It takes a robust support system and a significant amount of time to heal from the emotional scars left by such discriminatory behaviors. The friendships formed during these formative years can be irrevocably harmed, and it becomes increasingly difficult to trust those around you.

The impact of knowingly discriminatory behaviors is far-reaching. It not only affects the individuals directly targeted but also contributes to a toxic environment that can poison the entire school culture. This is why it is crucial to address and acknowledge such behavior, fostering a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere.

Concluding Thoughts

Discrimination, whether knowingly or unknowingly, leaves a lasting impact. It's a reminder that we must be mindful of our actions and their consequences. In conclusion, we need to create spaces where every individual feels valued and respected, laying the foundation for a better, more inclusive society.
