The Pursuit of Bliss: Finding Joy in Ignorance and the Present Moment

In the age of information where knowledge is at our fingertips, the notion of bliss through ignorance appears to be both ironic and contradictory. As the quotation suggests, 'Ignorance is bliss' - a statement often associated with a simpler time or a lack of awareness. Yet, the pursuit of knowledge can lead to a deeper understanding of existence, which in turn might bring about a sense of anguish. Find and ye shall be troubled, a phrase that reflects the paradox between the pursuit of knowledge and the pain it can bring.

The Present Moment is the Only Bliss

Bliss, the highest state of happiness, can be elusive despite our efforts. For many, the present moment is the only true source of bliss, despite the mind’s natural tendency to either dwell on the past or speculate about the future. The past does not exist, and the future has not yet arrived; they are merely constructs of our imagination.

When the mind is occupied by thoughts about the past or the future, it is pulled away from the present moment, which is the true source of bliss. To detach from these constructs and stay in the now is to achieve a state of liberation. This awakening can be characterized by a simple activity like closing your eyes, which allows the mind to be free from thought for a brief period. This moment of silence and clarity is bliss, a reflection of being the invigilator in the examination hall, watching over the examinee (the mind) without distraction.

Finding Bliss in Life’s Simplest Gifts

There are moments in life that bring us the greatest joy, and often, these moments are found in simple, unassuming ways. For instance, having my own home along the coast, away from the bustling area of L.A., has brought me immense happiness. This physical space has become a sanctuary, a place where I can find solitude and peace.

The Divine Perspective: A Believer's Joy

The pursuit of bliss can also find its path through spiritual or religious beliefs. There is a profound sense of fulfillment when one aligns with their higher purpose. Even as I reflect on my own life, I cannot help but wonder why I was chosen to walk this planet. The belief that every person is chosen by God, regardless of their beliefs, brings a sense of belonging and joy. The lyrics from the hymn 'And I' resonate with this sentiment, reminding us that our life's purpose is not about leaving a legacy but about living every moment to honor and glorify Him.

Bliss is not just the absence of pain, but a state of profound happiness and contentment. It can be achieved through embracing the present moment, entering into a state of thoughtlessness, and finding peace in one's surroundings and spiritual connection.

So, embrace the present, close your eyes, and let the bliss of the moment wash over you.
