The Quest for Self-Determination: A Journey Through Sacred Texts
Why Should I Stop Doing Whatever I Am Doing and Start to Follow My Own Way?
Are you ever questioned in your life and asked “Why are you doing it this way? Can you try something new?” If you are already doing whatever you are doing, carry on. But if you have found a better way and wish to change, this guide will help you understand the profound wisdom of self-determination found in sacred texts.
Exploring the Ancient Wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita
The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, one of the most revered texts in Hindu philosophy, is a part of the ancient epic Mahabharata. It is a dialogue between Lord Krishna and the noble warrior Arjuna, which occurs on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. The Gita is a treasure trove of wisdom on dharma, duty, and the path to self-realization.
To truly understand the Gita, one must immerse oneself in the original Sanskrit text along with a preferred translation. This journey is enhanced by exploring its background through the Mahabharata and deepening one's understanding of its teachings through the Upanishads. For me, this path took more than two years of dedicated study.
Upon completing this journey, I found great satisfaction in furthering my understanding by reading the English translations of the Holy Bible and the Holy Quran. These texts opened my eyes to contrasting perspectives on enlightenment, morality, and the nature of existence.
Delving into the Concept of the Day of Judgment
My curiosity led me to explore the concept of the day of judgment, a central theme in both Christian and Islamic traditions. Through the Holy Bible, I delved into the origins of the concept of eternal torment in fiery hell, as depicted in the eschatological visions of the Book of Revelation. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the concept, I also referred to the Antiquities of the Jews by historian Josephus, Hadith literature, and Sharia interpretations.
In this exploration, I found that each text offers unique insights into the human condition and our existential struggles. The process took another two years of rigorous study and reflection.
Why Reading These Texts Can Change Your Life
Reading the above-mentioned texts in the stated order and manner can profoundly transform your outlook on life. While I cannot discuss my personal grades or my first job, I can speak to the transformative power of these teachings on my own journey.
The Bhagavad Gita teaches us about the dharma—the righteous way of living—and how to find balance between one’s personal desires and the greater good. It emphasizes the importance of self-determination, encouraging us to listen to the inner voice and follow our own path. This wisdom is not confined to one religion but transcends cultural and spiritual boundaries.
Self-determination is about recognizing your own strengths and weaknesses and making choices that align with your true purpose. It is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. By embracing this concept, one can overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
