Voices from Tamil Nadu: Is Enough of Dravidian Parties Ruling Their State?
Voices from Tamil Nadu: Is Enough of Dravidian Parties Ruling Their State?
Introduction
With a rich cultural heritage and a deep-rooted political history, the state of Tamil Nadu has been governed by various parties, notably the Dravidian parties such as DMK and AIADMK, for many years. But in a recent conversation with my grandparents, who have lived in Tamil Nadu since 1990, a different perspective emerged. They voice concerns over the current rule, questioning whether 'enough of the Dravidian parties' should be in power. This article aims to explore these issues and the sentiments of the people in detail.
The Dravidian Perspective and My Voice
The term “Dravida” evokes sentiments associated with great figures like Thiruvalluvar, A.T. Thirumangalakudi, and N. Annadurai, who are revered as founders of the Dravidian movement. The Dravidian parties aim to uplift the Hindus who constitute approximately 70% of the population and ensure equal rights for all castes, without disregarding the genuine feelings of the caste Hindus.
However, I must clarify that praising Dravidian leaders does not make me blind to their faults.
Jai Periyar, the benevolent soul of the Dravidian movement, was a brother to A. T. Thirumangalakudi, and his legacy should be celebrated with sincerity.
As for myself, I stand firm in my belief that no one, not even Nadda (Narendra Modi), can unfairly harm DMK and AIADMK, and I am eager to receive any edification or advice from others.
Criticism of Current Governance
My grandparents share their concerns about the current state of governance. They point out the neglect of cultural heritage, specifically the maintenance of ancient and significant temples. These temples not only hold religious and historical value but are also an essential source of livelihood for many.

One heartbreaking example includes the pay scales of temple priests, which are shockingly low. In the nearby Vilvanathar temple, a priest earns just Rs. 19 per month, a stark contrast to the Kailasanathar temple in Brahmadesam, where the same position pays Rs. 215. This disparity not only reflects economic inequities but also the neglect of these historic religious sites.
Another major concern they raise is the rampant corruption within the governance structure. They have observed how certain politicians and bureaucrats involve themselves in corrupt practices, which has led to poor infrastructure, inadequate health and education facilities, and a mismanagement of funds. This corruption not only erodes trust in the system and the ruling parties but also hampers the state's overall development.
These issues are not simply academic; they have a direct and detrimental impact on the lives of the people in Tamil Nadu.
Alternative Parties and Their Record
While some political parties advocate for change, there are no better parties in India, at least not according to my grandparents. The BRS/TRS, TDP, and YSRCP may offer alternatives, but their policies and practices are perceived as similar to those of DMK and AIADMK, primarily confined to their home states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Therefore, a change in leadership is very much needed.
Call to Action
People of Tamil Nadu express a need for change and demand better governance. It is essential for the people to take an active part in the democratic process to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met. Only through collective effort and active participation can a positive change be brought about in the state.
Conclusion
The governance of Tamil Nadu is a complex topic, much deeper than surface-level policies and party labels. The sentiments expressed by my grandparents and the people of Tamil Nadu reflect a genuine desire for growth, development, and real improvements. It is a call for a new era of governance, where the people’s needs and aspirations are prioritized over partisan politics. Let us work towards a better future for Tamil Nadu.
