Why Did I Leave the Amish/Mennonite Lifestyle?

Let me start with a full disclaimer: I was not born into the Amish culture and have never lived within an Amish community. However, my connection is through a lifetime immersed in the environment of the Amish, befriending them, and working alongside them. Through these experiences, I have been able to blend several Amish values into my own life, leading to a simpler and more peaceful existence. But one thing I did leave behind was my Mennonite community.

Unique Reasons for Leaving

The reasons why individuals from an Amish background or a similar religious community leave are as varied and unique as the human species itself. No two stories are the same. For instance, some may leave because they didn't want to be part of the Amish church, while others aimed to explore the natural world. There are those who sought to marry outside the community or believed they were called to be neighbors with everyone.

There's no distinct trend for people leaving the community, but it is a common occurrence among those I have met and asked. No two people gave me the same answer; each story was unique, depending on their personal experiences and beliefs. It's a testament to the individualism and autonomy that can be found within even the most tight-knit communities.

Personal Journey and Values

Let me share my own journey. I am Mennonite, not Amish, and we share many similarities, especially when it comes to values and practices. I was shunned from my Mennonite community due to a conflict with my husband. During this period of exclusion, I discovered a deep passion for writing historical novels. Although Mennonite and Amish groups often allow writers, my community frowns upon it, considering it a misuse of resources.

Despite the disapproval of my community, I decided to pursue my dream of writing. I used my husband's computer to take online writing courses and began to write. About a year later, my first book, Sword of Peace, was published on Amazon. Interestingly, I only have a grade 8 education but managed to publish a book with considerable success. It's a journey that has brought both joy and sadness into my life.

Consequences and Current Situation

While I haven't physically left the Mennonite community yet, the impact of my writing decision is significant. Being shunned has made socializing with friends difficult. I often feel sad and long for the ability to socialize freely. However, I am determined to continue writing because it fills a void in my soul.

The community's stance is based on the belief that using computers and cell phones for personal activities goes beyond their intended use. As a woman, it was particularly challenging for me to deviate from these norms. Nonetheless, I managed to break the rules, buy my own computer, and teach myself how to use it. I have also taken online courses to develop my writing skills.

As my children grow older, the question of whether or not to leave the community will likely arise. For now, unless the community eventually accepts my writing, I am likely to remain within its boundaries. My determination to pursue my passion for writing in a way that respects cultural norms is a difficult but continuously evolving process.
